Cheating

"Cheaters don't prosper". This might be true, nonetheless cheating is an integral part of gaming, thus this category of the Codex contains articles that pertain to cheating in the Ultima series of games. Cheating is considered mainly things that either exploit weaknesses in the programming or the player doing things the programmers hadn't thought of.
Many of the Ultima games have built-in cheat modes. They were obviously meant for internal QA testing, but were left in the game for players' enjoyment.
Note: Some procedures may involve editing a game file; create a backup copy of the file before proceeding. Enabling cheat mode may also make it impossible to finish the game as intended, and may reduce enjoyment of the game, trivializing all the content and thus negating all challenge.
Additional note: All cheats listed are for the PC version of the game, unless otherwise noted.

Ultima V has fewer cheats than later Ultimas, but there are still some bugs that can be exploited. Notable examples include the Multiple Magic Carpet Trick and the Easy Magic Axes trick.

Ultima VI is the first Ultima game to have a builtin cheat menu. While it is certainly useful, there are other interesting things you can do in this game.

Ultima VII is a cheaters paradise! The builtin cheat menu allows you to make big alterations to the main game. There are also plenty of interesting areas and items that you can only get to using the cheat menu (but make sure Lord British does not catch you :). In addition, there are plenty of unintentional glitches that can be very useful, interesting or just plain weird!

Several cheat options are available in Ultima VII Part Two. They are very similar to Ultima VII (as the games generally use the same engine).

Ultima VIII has a cheat room with almost all the items you could ever need, as well as a few other more complicated cheat mechanisms.
