[edit] Description
The crypts named Dungeon Covetous south of Minoc at the east cost of the Bay of Lost Hope has a really rich history. Once undisturbed, the Britannian Mining Company had destroyed the entire upper level of the crypt in their mining operations, upsetting the dead and undead in the lower levels. Now Covetous is flooded with them, Ghosts, Skeletons and other, getting revenge for the destruction of their resting place. The upper level is totally destroyed and a empty mine, but the intact lower levels are a maze of crypts with deadly traps.
While rich treasure awaits in the lower levels, the dead won't be willing to tolerate intruders. Still, Covetous is one of the easier dungeons, as the dead can't take much damage and are therefore easily defeated.
[edit] History
The Anti-Sacrifice Dungeon of Covetous was first entered in Ultima IV. The Orange Stone was found in it, and the magic orb in it gave good experience boosts and it connected to two of the altar rooms. It was already then a royal crypt for the rulers of a distant province that is now Minoc, but when the dead awakened, it was given up. After the end of the Quest of the Avatar, the Great Council sealed the dungeon, to lock in the horrors in it.
In Ultima V, Covetous again was visited. The Avatar yelled the Word of Power "AVIDUS", learned from Fiona, to open the entrance. It connected to the Underworld, where the Shard of Falsehood was found. In Ultima VI, the dungeon stayed the same.
20 years before Ultima VII, the Britannian Mining Company destroyed the entire upper level of Covetous in their mining operation, after unsealing it and destroying all monsters on that level, where also Blackrock was found, upsetting the dead in the lower levels, which were untouched by this. The Avatar visited Covetous to find Blackrock.
Covetous is a complete mine in Ultima IX. All levels contain blackrock and gems. Being abandoned, the mine's lowest level has filled with water.
[edit] Trivia
- In Ultima V, the seventh level can only be entered from the sixth via the spell Des Por. There are two ladders on the seventh level going up. Each leads to a room; one which has a one way only exit back to a room on the sixth, the other having no exits.
- In Ultima V, Covetous, as the name might suggest, is an excellent place to farm for gold. On the first two levels half the rooms respawn (including a high end weapon and shield per room), there are no pits or traps, and there are healing springs easily available.
- In Ultima VI, Covetous and Wrong are one dungeon (illogical).
- In Ultima VII, Malloy and Owings can be found in Covetous.
[edit] Covetous in Ascension
Covetous is a mine on all levels in Ascension. Undead creatures are still a theme in it. The most numerous are skeletons. There are a few zombies and one ghost. And don't forget the liche on the bottom level.
The mine does contain a large amount of precious gems as well as the Crown Of Brilliance.
