Jester, from Ultima IV manual | |
First appearance: | Ultima I |
Last appearance: | Ultima VII Part Two |
Jesters normally exist purely as a joyful source of color and entertainment for the everyday citizen. However, their fun-filled facade can sometimes mask great maliciousness. A warped jester can quickly turn from harmless fool to deadly joker -- beware of these dangerous individuals!
Sometimes known as "larks" in earlier Ages, jesters can primarily be found in and around castles.
Lore[]
Bouncing around in eternal jumping jacks, jesters are usually the buffoons you'd expect but sometimes the buffoonery masks great wisdom.
- from The Second Age of Darkness (Ultima II)
They entertain Lord British with their antics. Occasionally they even harass visitors.
- from The Book of Play (Ultima III)
Notable Examples[]
- Chuckles is one of the good jesters. While he is a prankster by nature, he knows the line and never crosses it.
- Jesters in Ultima I are less nice, and have to be killed to get the key to the cell of the princess.
- The odd village New Jester in Ultima II is full of almost nothing but clingy jesters.
- The Banes of Chaos truly have a sick sense of humor. When the Avatar comes near the Castle of the White Dragon in Ultima VII Part Two to confront them, the hero is confronted with a horde of killer jesters that throw around deadly fireballs.
