Nicholas is an orphan, living in the nursery of Castle Britannia as a charity case.
In Ultima VII, Nanna explained that Nicholas was another charity case, beside Kristy, that had come into the care of the state. Nicholas as a typical child hadn't much meaningful dialogue. However, he did wet his diapers when the Avatar talked to him, much to the party's disgust.
During Ultima Underworld II, he was away from the castle, together with the other children, thus he was not locked in.
