Meditation is a very essential skill in Ultima Online for a mage, since it determines how fast his or her mana regenerates. The higher the skill, the faster. Active meditation actually increases the rate to double the normal (while nothing else can be done by the player). This skill therefore is essential for Magery, Necromancy, Chivalry and all other mana-based skills.
A character's mana regeneration is governed by the skills of Meditation and Focus, the Intelligence stat, and any Mana Regeneration items that are equiped. The following Mana Regeneration formulas illustrate the rate of regeneration from Meditation and Intelligence:
- Rate from Med & Int = 2 + (Meditation * 3 + Intelligence) / 40
If you have a skill of 100 or better in Meditation you get a 10% bonus, making the GM+ formula:
- GM Rate from Med & Int = 2 + (1.1 * (Meditation * 3 + Intelligence) / 40)

Each time the Meditation skill is activated via macro or skill button, the player has a chance to gain.
Passive
Each time 1 mana is regenerated, Meditation has a chance to gain. Keeping the mana constantly below maximum is a very good method, while moving around is not forbidden and also holds no penalty.
