Despite having already discovered gunpowder in the Age of Darkness, for a long, long time it wasn't used for anything other than cannons. Using it for hand-held weapons wasn't even considered. However, 200 years after the time of the False Prophet, prototypes of hand-held gunpowder weapons started to appear. What is clear is that this distance weapon is only stopped by the strongest armor.
Since they are new weapons, Muskets appear rarely in Ultima VII. One Musket from Earth can be seen in the museum. Lord British has one with ammunition ready for the Avatar in his storeroom. A third can be found together with ammunition on a small island north of Jhelom.
According to Vetron's Guide to Weapons and Armour, the Musket has an effectiveness rating of 9.
- It is possible to get Ammunition by clicking on the giant bones strewn throughout Britannia; this works best with the bones in the Drylands.
- Until muskets were added into the game, cannons were the only weapons in Britannia known to use gunpowder (not counting the out-of-place, futuristic weapons of Ultima I and Ultima II).
