Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin
MD-Rasputin
Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin, from Martian Dreams
Species: Human
Appearances
Martian Dreams
Location: Argyre

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (1871-1916) was a Russian monk, who would make a serious impact on Earth and Mars alike.

Prior to Martian Dreams, Rasputin was visited by the power-hungry martian, Raxachk, in his dreams, compelling him to sabotage the space cannon into firing a day ahead of schedule. Once on Mars, Raxachk lured Rasputin into a dream machine and took over his body, leaving Rasputin in a nightmare of his own assassination. Rasputin was able to relay these events to the Avatar in Argyre, once Raxachk had given him back his body.

Years after Rasputin's return to Earth, his nightmare would come true. After gaining considerable influence over the wife of Tsar Nicholas II during World War I, circles close to the Tsar wanted to get rid of him. On December 16th 1916, they poisoned Rasputin first, then stabbed and shot him, before throwing the still-living monk into the freezing Neva river, where he eventually died by drowning under the ice-cover.

Ironically, that exactly had been his nightmare.

Lore[]

At the time of our Martian adventure, Rasputin, Russia's "Mad Monk," was a wandering holy man and mystic yet to make his mark on the world. He is said to have possessed mystical powers of persuasion, particularly over women. Alexandra, wife of Tsar Nicholas II, fell under his spell and, through her, Rasputin influenced the tsar himself. Often blamed for the conditions which led to the Russian Revolution, he was ultimately assassinated by conservative forces in Russia. The story of his execution is a strange one -- legend has it that he was poisoned, stabbed, shot, and then thrown into a hole in an ice-covered river, where he finally drowned. Tales of his psychic powers take on greater, more frightening significance in light of events on Mars. There may be more truth to the tales than modern men care to admit...

Trivia[]

  • In reality, Rasputin's death had been much more profane. After the conspirators had trapped him, they'd tortured him for hours to get information, before executing him with three shots and dumping the body into the Neva.
