[edit] Description
Dungeon Shame. Located at the shore of Lost Lake west of Britain. Once a gold mine, the miners had fled when monsters invaded it. Now Shame has regressed to its state as a cave system. And the place is dangerous, the remains of countless miners, Headless, Corpsers and other monsters have made it their home, hating every kind of intruder into their domain. Traps also make scouting the dungeon very dangerous. Also the obvious way is not always the right one, and teleporters can confuse the careless adventurer.
These dangers make Shame a difficult and dangerous place, which only more experienced adventurers should enter, as all others will surely perish in Shame because of the traps and monsters in it.
[edit] History
The Anti-Honor Dungeon of Shame was first entered in Ultima IV. The Purple Stone was found in it, an the magic orb in it gave the good experience boosts and it connected to two of the altar rooms. It was, however, hard to reach. After the end of the Quest of the Avatar, the Great Council sealed the dungeon, to lock in the horrors in it.
The mine started to decay in Ultima V, when Shame again was visited. The Avatar yelled the Word of Power "INFAMA", learned from Sindar, to open the entrance. It connected to the Underworld, where the the only place to dungeon Doom was. In Ultima VI, Old Ybarra was missing in Shame, and the Avatar found him there, to get his part of the map.
After that time, Shame fully became a cave system again. In Ultima VII, the Sphere Generator of the Guardian was located in it. Also, the mage Selvyn and his band of rebels had built his fortress on top of Shame, with stairs from the dungeon into it. Brother Wayne, the missing monk, was found there as well.
In Ultima IX the Dungeon Shame is full of logic puzzles. Once you have solved them and gained access to the column you run into Lord Blackthorn who destroys the Chalice of Honor in a cave full of ordinary ones. Dupre tells you to take one a normal chalice with you. After that You have to kill the Wyrmguard guarding the column. Once she is dead you can enter the column and retrieve the Rune. In a corner of the cave with the column is the "Sword of Thunder" or "Lighting sword".
[edit] Trivia
- In Ultima V, the first level is an empty room without exits. The characters are in "combat mode" so Des Por does not work either.
- In Ultima VII, Shame is falsely labeled as Despise (While Despise isn't labeled at all).
[edit] Shame in Ascension
Dungeon Shame is full of logic puzzles. It does provide you a confrontation with Blackthorn over the Chalice of Honor though. The Wyrmguard guarding the column is the hardest creature in Britannia to kill.
