Before the land of Britannia was formed by the great cataclysm, it was known as Sosaria -- a large land, with many feuding city states.

Sosaria had been an ancient land where wondrous beings walked, such as the Cyclops, before Humans reached Sosaria's shores. Civilizations rose and fell and the legacy of that past are the numerous underground dungeons. Magic was common but eventually deemed corrupting, and those who practiced it were banished until it was forgotten. Mt. Drash was the location of an ancient manuscript that described Starwalking.

Sosaria once consisted of four continents: The Lands of Lord British, The Lands of the Dark Unknown, The Lands of the Feudal Lords, and the Lands of Danger and Despair (later known as the Serpent Isle).

Sosaria was once fertile with plants and animals, and Humans with the other races - Elves, Dwarves and Bobbits - worked together in harmony, until Mondain the wizard came, unleashed creatures and beasts of the underworld, and sowed rivalry between the city states; because of this continual conflict, the land grew bitter and warlike. Only the keeps remained safe, and they were isolated from each other. During that Age of Darkness, magic saw a renaissance as people resolved to the ancient lore to cope with Mondain's sorcery; scholars revisited the ancient tomes and adepts started to be training again. The leaders compromised, letting the dreaded art to be used against Mondain.

When Mondain was defeated by the Stranger, the world was sundered apart, and the other three continents thought lost. The Lands of Lord British, vastly changed by this event, were now simply called Sosaria.

It wasn't until The Third Age of Darkness that Sosaria's people were united, through the common threat known as Exodus. When The Stranger (who would later be called The Avatar) destroyed Exodus, Sosaria was rocked by the great cataclysm, completely reforming the continent once again. Through the guidance of Lord British, the people rebuilt the shattered land into the splendor that is now Britannia.
