The First Age of Darkness comes with the re-release of Ultima I. It is 39 pages long. In-game, an unknown Sosarian is the author of the book. In real-life, Dave Albert has written the book.

It wasn't in the original release of the game - that was the Playbook. This book tries to build a bridge between the first part and the later, explaining a lot of the story in the process. Thus it is elemental to understand the game and the background.
